Roma Awil came to the United States with her four daughters in 2016 as a refugee from Yemen, one of the countries under the travel ban. Her husband and son remain in Yemen.
She fled war to Djibouti with her family in May 2015 on a boat journey that took15 hours by the sea with 350 others, mostly women and children. They spent months in a refugee camp.
“I was a teacher in Yemen for 35 years in a public school. I also taught crafting and sewing as a volunteer in local violence rehabilitation programs for women and minorities.
“I have always loved to make crafts , recycling and up-cycling is an obsession and passion for me and I learn more every day. I really enjoy the challenge of work with different materials and repurpose them into something unique ( baskets, vases, etc. ) and beautiful.”
